Throwback Thursday {She's a Modern Vintage Rock and Roll}

I'm working on a major remodel {my own, this time!} and I am under pressure to select kitchen lighitng. I am drawn to the pendants that have a little bit of an edge...nothing fussy, nothing fancy, not tooooo shiny. Something that will still have an impact and add a layer of character to the space. The silhouette of the ones I've been looking at reminded me of the design board I put together a few years back for one of the coolest gals I've ever known....she's a MODERN VINTAGE ROCK AND ROLL. That's the style I think her personality and home exudes. Retro, Modern, Vintage Chic and Edginess.

SHE'S A "MODERN VINTAGE ROCK & ROLL"

HERE IS HOW YOU CAN GET THE LOOK:

-It's eclectic but not junked up. So edit and keep things from feeling too cluttered. It is a little of this and a little of that, but things still stay uncluttered, unfussy and have either clean lines or bold color/texture, with only a few exceptions here and there.
-Shiny objects with bold lines. Don't be afraid to mix metals and styles.
-Statement pieces like gilded gold mirrors and retro/vintage pieces.
-Industrial hints here and there.
-Bold colors, bold patterns as accents.
-Ecclectic accessories....like different lamps, pillows that don't match one another, etc. Don't be matchy matchy, you want to look like you've acquired and collected or just ended up with all this fabulousness. 

Don't let this look fool you...there is an art to really being able to tell what works and what doesn't with this sort of space.  Fall back on scale and overall tone and like I said, never be too matchy matchy and you'll win with this look.

Malachite Monday: The Malachite Room, Chapultepec Castle

Some people think malachite is just a fad, a phase. 

But there is a history of malachite appreciation and its use in decor.  

Over the next few Mondays, I'll be sharing some of my favorite malachite antiques that are found in museums and historical places around the world.  

We've visited Malachite Rooms in palaces in both France and Russia...

today, we're off to Mexico. 

Chapultepec Castle or Castillo de Chapultepec overlooks Mexico City. With its Spanish Colonial roots, it resembles European palaces of the time. The castle's famed gilded, solid malachite doors of "The Malachite Room" were purchased from an 1850's Worlds Fair Exhibit...and are Russian from the mines in the Urals.  Hailed as one of the most beautiful spots in Mexico City, tourists flock to see the palace gardens and The Malachite Room.

Throwback Thursday {Audrey Room Reveal}

Here we are, knee deep in our new home's renovation and the subject has to be dealt with....kids rooms. We're picking out paint colors and light fixtures and incorporating A LOT of what we already have that will be coming out of storage in a couple of weeks. I thought it would be good to look back at one of my favorite details in my teen daughter's old room and see if we wanted to use it again in the new place.

TEEN GIRL ROOM {THE AUDREY ROOM REVEAL}

Several months back, I shared my E-Design for a client in Florida who requested "an airy, maybe pink, maybe orange, maybe purple, maybe white and gold, fun and quirky yet grown up, Audrey Hepburn sort of room" for her 14 year old. I interpreted this as "SUGAR, SPICE & KILIM".  It's light and breezy, bohemian yet elegant, and most importantly, still fun and not stuffy....because, after all, this room is for a teen girl, right?!

Malachite Monday {The Malachite Room at The Hermitage}

But there is a history of malachite appreciation and its use in decor.  

Over the next few Mondays, I'll be sharing some of my favorite malachite antiques that are found in museums and historical places around the world.  

Last week we toured  The Malachite Room at Versailles which was full of malachite gifts from the Russian Tsar Alexander I.  So, it's no surprise that our second malachite museum installment takes us to St. Petersburg where they have their very own Malachite Room. 

Originally in The Winter Palace, now part of The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, The Malachite Room is renowned for its gold gilded ceilings and doors, and of course, it is named for its massive malachite pillars, urns and mantle.  Solid malachite from Ural mines steal the show in this magnificent room. 

Here's a way to get the Malachite and Gold look in a more understated way, than say, a Palace Receiving Room. Because, it's been a popular pairing for Centuries, yet still seems fresh today.
